A short piece I wrote for thebigsmoke.com.au today:

I started to write this piece about getting older and it turned into an appropriate piece to publish on Mother's Day (if you're in Australia, it's Mother's Day today - go and call your Mum!).
http://thebigsmoke.com.au/2014/05/11/mothers-day-mirror-mirror-wall/ On thebigsmoke.com.au today, my 2 cents about recent A-League supporters dramas..
http://thebigsmoke.com.au/2014/03/08/smoke-signal-supporters-heart-hyundai-league/ There’s a saying often quoted to young children who speak their mind - “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”. Maybe this good advice should be written into a sign-up pledge for users of social media services. There’s a reason why facebook doesn’t have the much demanded ‘dislike’ button. The nice people at The Big Smoke website decided that my writing was good enough to publish. The link to my first published post is below.
The Big Smoke is a very good opinion writing website, which you should check out when you have a chance. Look out for more contributions from me later this year. http://thebigsmoke.com.au/2014/02/12/memory-simple-life/ As anyone who has ever tried to go out for breakfast, lunch or dinner with me has learnt, I am a very unsophisticated eater. Even when I go out for a normal pub meal I can still get it all wrong, especially if I’m with new people. I usually order something that ends up being completely inappropriate, like burger and chips when everyone else has ordered something proper like a roast dinner, leading to the inevitable awkward “Oh heck, do I need to eat my chips with a fork? Do I need to politely cut this burger in half before trying to eat it? Why didn’t I just order a steak?!” moment. When you take me out of the pub and into the wider world of dining, things just get worse… Saturday, it’s a Saturday! De La Soul nailed the Saturday vibe in that track, don’t you think? What happens on your typical Saturday? Wake up in your own time, no alarm to break your dreams on Saturday. Have the breakfast you really want and take your time eating it while you channel surf between cartoons and pop videos. Read the paper, it’s the only day you have time to get past the headlines. Save the magazine and the travel pages for later, because there’s a beautiful day outside. I’m not necessarily talking about my favourite tracks, or even about music that I regularly listen to. I’m talking about tracks that spark memories and emotions, music that grabs me and shakes me up. Don’t bother talking to me when any of these tracks are playing; I’ll be too busy ‘having a moment’.
It was the British summer of the year 2000. In the previous year, a new television show concept had launched in the Netherlands. A group of strangers living in a house together, their every move filmed and every word recorded. The contestants had no contact with the outside world except for the disembodied voice of their keeper, Big Brother. In the year 2000, Big Brother arrived in the UK.
Why do we, human society, enjoy violent forms of entertainment? We all have different limits, and I consider my own tolerance level to be quite low, but even so I have always enjoyed classic style murder mystery novels and TV shows.
As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I don’t watch a lot of films, so when I do go to look for a DVD to rent I’m always amazed at the high proportion of films where the main focus of the entertainment is violence. |
